THE CRAFT PROJECT

CRAFT (Cartonnage Regionalism in the Ateliers of the Fayum Territory) is a Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Project researching funerary cartonnage from the Ptolemaic and Roman periods of Egyptian history. The project aims to explore the production methods of cartonnage artefacts, including mummy masks, foot-cases, chest covers, and full body coverings, and to determine if there were regional differences in the craftsmanship techniques, iconography, and decorative style. Geographically, CRAFT focuses on the area of the Fayum Oasis and the Western Egyptian Desert.

PROJECT INVESTIGATION

CRAFT examines the production of cartonnage pieces through the scanning and inspection of their three-dimensional structures. This method enables the creation of digital replicas of the artifacts, facilitating comparisons among objects across different museum collections. As a result, researchers can identify similarities and differences in manufacturing techniques, such as the inclusion of customizable features and the use of a single mould. Scroll down and delve into the Methodology that CRAFT employs to uncover fascinating insights into the production of cartonnage artefacts.
